|What on earth is the difference between a "rate" and a "gift"...
When one attendees a party, wedding or celebration it is usually considered good manners for the guest to bring a gift. It has long been tradition and is therefore acceptable that one may suggest appropriate gifts. The difference is that the giver is free to choose a gift that fits their tastes and budget as well as free to decline to attend if they would feel uncomfortable not being able to afford a social that was out of economically out of their range. This is a REALLY POLITE WAY OF SAYING I WILL THROW YOU OUT IF YOU ATTEMPT TO NEGOTIATE A FEE WITH ME SO DON'T ASK.
